The film introduces the a legal loophole requiring Scott Calvin to marry by Christmas Eve or lose his title. This forces him back to the real world, leaving a toy version of himself in charge at the Pole. It’s a clever way to ground the magical elements in human stakes, even if the "countdown to Christmas" trope is a bit predictable.
