In 1989, the duo released their debut album, , entirely produced by Marley Marl. The title track was a semi-autobiographical "rags-to-riches" tale that became a landmark for what would later be called "mafioso rap".

The story of Kool G Rap is a journey from the gritty street corners of Corona, Queens, to becoming the "lyrical architect" who defined the standard for technical rap. Born Nathaniel Wilson, he wasn't always the "Kool Genius of Rap." In the early '80s, he was just a young dude with a growing reputation in the neighborhood for his sharp tongue and complex bars. The Meeting That Changed the Game

Soon after, Polo drove G Rap to legendary studio in Queensbridge. They weren't there to sign a deal yet; they were just there to cut a demo. That one-night session produced "It's a Demo" , a track so impressive that Marley Marl instantly inducted them into the Juice Crew , hip-hop's first elite collective. The Blueprint for Mafioso Rap

G Rap’s path into the history books began when he met through his childhood neighbor, the legendary Eric B. . Polo was a respected figure in the neighborhood and was looking for a rapper just as G Rap was looking for a DJ. They didn't even formally meet until Eric B. linked them up, telling G Rap, "I got you".
