Feeling neglected while her husband is at work and her son is at school, Laura Halpern decides to start a home renovation project to fill her days. She begins an affair with her contractor, Elliott (also referred to as Vince in some descriptions), but soon finds herself wracked with guilt. When she tries to end the relationship, Elliott's obsession takes a dangerous turn; he begins building a secret, "special room" for her in her own basement, fueled by a mixture of desire and rage.
